Essential Oils

Essential oils are in no way a new phenomenon. These plant extracts have been used for their various benefits for thousands of years. Essential oils provide benefits such as aromatherapy, treating skin conditions, soothing inflammation, and more. I have fallen in love with these oils, initially for their aromatic features, but once I learned of all the health benefits, I am officially attached! Read on to get a breakdown of essentials oils, how to use them, and my favorites.

Essential oils are made from parts of plants like leaves, herbs, and barks. They can be added to vegetable oils, creams, or bath gels and should always be diluted before you breathe them in or rub them onto your skin. However, don't just rub them anywhere. Oils that are okay to be used on your arms and legs may not be safe to put inside your mouth, nose eyes, or intimate parts. And like anything else yo put on your skin, it's best to test a little bit on a small area to see how your skin responds.

Some benefits of essential oils include: reducing stress, anxiety, and depression; relieving headaches and migraines; helping to induce sleep; and reducing muscle and skin inflammation. There are over 90 types of essential oils with their own unique smells and benefits. Of these, I have a few favorites to share. Here is a list of 11 of my favs and some of their known benefits:
  1. Peppermint - boost energy
  2. Lavender - stress relief
  3. Sandalwood - calm nerves and help with focus
  4. Bergamot - reduce stress and improve skin conditions
  5. Rose - improve mood and reduce anxiety
  6. Chamomile - improve mood and relaxation
  7. Ylang-Ylang - relieve headaches, nausea, and skin conditions
  8. Tea Tree - boost immunity, fight infections, soothe itching, balances oily skin, and fights acne
  9. Jasmine - aide in childbirth and libido
  10. Lemon - help with digestion, mood, and headaches
  11. Frankincense - calm nerves, fade scars, and rejuvenate skin
Be sure to look for a trusted manufacturer that makes pure oils without additives. Not all additives are bad, however, oils with other ingredients are more likely to irritate the skin. Also, do your own research. Do a thorough look into the oil before using it and, if you feel it necessary, don't be afraid to ask your doctor for their thoughts before use.
